PRACTICAL GUIDES

Partial chimney removal

Partial removal first requires assessment of the chimney sections that remain. Upper floors or the external stack may depend on masonry being removed below.

Consider the whole height

Document the chimney from the room to the roof, including shared or connected parts. A single room photo does not show the complete support arrangement.

Support and permissions

An engineer assesses retained support and any new structural solution. Check association requirements, flue use and the official permit process for the address.

Repair boundaries

Specify closing of floors, ceilings and roof openings. Structural support, weatherproofing and decorative repairs are separate items unless explicitly included.

Preparation at a glance

  • Provide photos on every affected floor.
  • Arrange assessment of retained sections.
  • Specify supports and repair boundaries.

Frequently asked question

Can the external stack stay on the roof?

Its support and connections must be structurally assessed before lower components are removed.
