PRACTICAL GUIDES

Concrete floor or cement screed: why it matters

Cement screed is generally a finishing layer above a supporting floor. A concrete floor may itself be structural. Establish the layers and function before removal.

Identify the building layer

Screed, levelling compound and structural slabs need different removal boundaries. Thickness and connection to surrounding components matter; the top surface alone is insufficient.

Services and reinforcement

Heating, pipes and reinforcement may be present. Provide drawings and records. Structural reinforcement is not treated as an incidental obstacle during removal.

Quotation and handover

Describe the retained layer and required end condition. Removal, structural work, repairs and a new floor are separate items. A quote must use the actual build-up rather than a general material name.

Preparation at a glance

  • Document thickness and layers.
  • Provide structural and service records.
  • Specify the retained floor and repairs.

Frequently asked question

Is screed demolition the same as concrete floor removal?

No. Function, thickness and risks can differ, so both need an assessed scope.
