PRACTICAL GUIDES

Tile removal with underfloor heating

Retaining underfloor heating must be assessed before tile removal. Pipe position, cover and the tile, adhesive and screed layers determine the possibilities.

Understand the floor layers

The heating may sit within screed or another system. Tile removal can affect adhesive and underlying layers. A visible surface does not show the depth of services.

Documents and assessment

Provide installation drawings, available construction photos and floor records. If position or build-up is unknown, further assessment is needed before retention can be agreed.

After removal

Ask the floor installer what repairs and preparation are needed. Testing or repairing heating belongs to the appropriate installer. Demolition alone does not establish that the system is ready for reuse.

Preparation at a glance

  • Collect heating installation records.
  • Identify retained layers.
  • Agree testing and the new floor requirements.

Frequently asked question

Can underfloor heating always remain?

No. Its position and floor build-up must be assessed before retention is promised.
